Industries
The main industries in Winnipeg, Manitoba are: manufacturing, agriculture, hydroelectricity, and mining. Within manufacturing, processed foods and transportation equipment represent 36% of shipments, the rest composed of machinery, wood products, chemicals, fabricated metal products, plastics, furniture, printing, clothing and electrical products. Winnipeg has Canada’s only agricultural merchandise exchange, making the city the centre of Canada’s grain trade. With agriculture production, crop account for about 57% and livestock accounts for about 43 percent. Manitoba holds 90% of the hydro-electric potential of the prairies. Other industries Winnipeg has are aerospace, finance, and farm equipment. Winnipeg was most probably able to have the natural resources for mining because when Pangaea still existed, North America was located near the equator, making the temperature capable of having the rich resources. Winnipeg has a resource-based industry with its mining and farming industries.
